Tips For Choosing The Best Underwater Fishing Glove

Choose the best Underwater Fishing gloves

A very important part of the underwater fishing equipment are undoubtedly the gloves. They offer thermal protection, because the hands lose a lot of heat, as well as protection against cuts, punctures ... and must maintain a sufficient sensitivity to "feel" the trigger. We should never dive without gloves, because the skin in the water becomes much softer and the cuts with the rocks are habitual and even dangerous. In addition to when we handle the catches, they cut with their gills and spines.

Bear in mind that gloves that do not protect properly will make it possible for us to get cold, being impossible to continue fishing after a while, making it useless to wear the best suit.

Po ideally are gloves that have a good compromise between sensitivity, touch and resistance.

The choice of gloves must be made depending on the type of fishing and waters that we go fishing. It is not the same fishing in the north where we are continually grabbing the bottom, with the wear and tear that implies, that a fishing in free waters. In the same way we will not use the same gloves in warm waters that in cold zones.

Therefore, we will see some tips to choose the best gloves for our.

Thermal Protection

Depending on the material in which they are constructed and their thickness, the gloves offer thermal protection. The necessary will be determined by the waters that we fish. As is logical, in colder waters we will need more thickness. And in temperate waters gloves with less thickness. If we talk about warm waters, gloves "amara" that simply protect us against cuts will be enough.

Thus, in cold waters, 5mm gloves will be sufficient for the most demanding conditions. In extreme cases (for example winter in Norway and similar waters) we can even go to 7mm.

If it's good quality gloves, 3mm gloves (as long as they do not have holes) could be enough for cold water too.

This topic is very important, not all wetsuits are the same and in the same thickness some gloves will be hotter than others.

Resistance

Another very important characteristic is the resistance to breakage. The gloves suffer a lot. Especially for holding on to the rocks, scratching at the bottom ... And one of the elements that most breaks them is at the tips of the fingers, not only the yolks, but on the top, against the nail, which is an area which tends to break easily (especially in the thumb)

Therefore reinforced gloves, such as Spetton winter or Med Green , Epsealon Fusion and similar will be a great option. Keep in mind that these reinforcements lose some sensitivity on the trigger, although not excessive (you have the review of the gloves by clicking on the link in the name)

Thus we find normal gloves, such as models in lycra or without specific reinforcements (the most common) that are comfortable gloves, hot and that offer great sensitivity. But on the contrary they break relatively easy. They are cheaper gloves generally. Or if not reinforced, with a little less sensitivity, something more expensive to start, but with a much longer duration (and generally greater thermal protection at the same thickness)

Attention To The Size And The State Of The Glove

Very important to wear the right size. Gloves that are too large will allow water to enter and circulate, so thermal protection will be much less.

The same if they squeeze us, it will hinder the circulation of blood. With which we must choose the right size, both in length and width. Here the more elastic gloves are an advantage.

Also very important that the glove does not have holes, that the seams are not open ... because the water will circulate and the glove will not fulfill its function.

And one last detail, the glove must go by OUT of the suit, not inside. The reason is that in case of leaks, a hole ... the water would go directly into the suit. Only in case of gloves in perfect condition should be put inside. And our recommendation is always from the outside. The glove itself will make the suit fit better and not water. And the water that enters the glove will heat up quickly. Although some models are also designed to go inside.

Thus, depending on the water temperature our recommendations are:
  • Winter or cold water: 5mm Lycra gloves, elastic and hot like those of the link or specific models such as Spetton Winter , Spetton Med Green or Epsealon Fusion , in 3mm.
  • Summer or warm water: 3mm gloves, simple or reinforced
  • Extreme conditions: 7mm gloves, although we do not recommend them due to lack of tact. They are usually mitten type, with several fingers joined. 5mm gloves in good condition should be enough.
Of course there are many models. The ones we have selected are for value for money and our good experiences with them.
